It is officially beginning to feel like summer! When spring turns to summer, I am inspired to start fresh with a blank slate in my home. I pack away all of the glass bunnies, and pastel speckled eggs, and clear out any left over easter candy! (Clear out, as in eat. Shhh… Don’t tell my kids). When summer comes around, I like to lighten up my home decor and take it down to a crisp and clean look. Spring time can look quite colorful around here, so I start creating this blank slate by thinking about what is inspiring me going into this new season. I consider the feeling, colors, textures, patterns, and type of lighting that makes me think of summer.
Feeling Of Summer
When I think of summer, the words crisp, clear, and colorful come to mind. Most people feel more relaxed in the summer time. School is out, some people have vacations planned, and extracurriculars may be winding down. Summer has always been the hardest season for me to get inspired by in the previous years, but my way of thinking when it comes to decorating has shifted significantly in just this past year. I now focus on the feeling that I want my space to give me instead of what I think the decor should look like that season. To me, summer feels like a coastal cottage by the beach with white curtains blowing in the breeze. I am on the porch relaxed, flipping though a magazine, and drinking an ice cold glass of sweet tea. This is the feeling that I want to recreate in my simple summer home decor.
Colors of Summer
In years past, I have mixed many colors of decor all in one room, because summer is colorful… right? Well, summer decor can be colorful, without being full of color. I now choose two or three colors per season to focus on, and pack the rest away so that I do not get overwhelmed by the different colors and patterns going on in a single space. The colors that make me think of summer, are whites, blues, and greens. Hues of blue have been slowly sneaking their way into my home over the past few years, and I am really loving the way that everything is coming together. For my summer decor, I will be using blankets, pillows, rugs, wall art, hand towels, picture frames, and greenery all in shades of white, green, and blue.
Texture of Summer
I look for light and airy textures in my simple summer decor. Textures of summer to me look like white linen sheets, cool cotton quilts, and sheer white curtains. Rattan, wicker, and water hyacinth baskets just whisper summer beach house to me, and I have slowly implemented them into my everyday decor. I replaced my heavy coral curtains in my living room with white sheer curtains to give the space a summer facelift. I also traded out my tan sheer curtains for white ones to give my bathroom a lighter feel.
Patterns of Summer
The patterns in my simple summer decor are kept quite plain. I implement stripes and solids, but usually pack away anything too busy, unless it is a light fabric or texture. One of my favorite ways to add patterns throughout my decor is by using throw pillows. Here I have paired a blue striped throw pillow with a solid blue blanket.
Lighting Of Summer
When I think of lighting for simple summer home decor, I think of open blinds, and bright, white, natural light. I like to give all of my windows a good cleaning to let that bright summer light shine in first thing in the morning. In the afternoon, when the kids and I go out to play, I shut all of the blinds and turn up the AC. Then when we come inside for our snack and quiet time, we are nice and cool. These floral curtains are an example of how I welcome natural summer lighting through sheer fabrics, while also being an exception to my pattern rule, because of their light texture.
